Palzor (Paljor) Stadium, located in Gangtok, is one of the largest stadiums in the state of Sikkim. A landmark attraction of the city of Gangtok, this artificial turf stadium is owned by Sikkim Football Association and is the official headquarters of the United Sikkim Football Club.

This stadium, which was previously called the Polo Ground, currently has a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators, with it generally hosting association football matches – both at the club level and lower division level.

Lined with beautiful trees, the stadium looks quite charming from a distance. Its top class architecture and the fantastic playing arena, with the backdrop of scenic mountains, make it a must-visit attraction when in Gangtok.

The stadium can be visited in the morning or evening for a leisure walk and witnessing groups of people indulging in different exercises and sports activities.

History of Palzor Stadium in Gangtok

As per records, the place where the Palzor Stadium is built today was once used to be a resting and feeding ground for sheep by Tibetan traders, when they used to travel between Tibet and India. In 1939, the Forest Department was given the charge of the ground for a grass demonstration farm.

By 1941, the work was completed for which grass was brought in from Venezuela and Africa. Thereafter, it was used for hosting public meetings and political gatherings.

The aristocratic family of Sikkim, the Chogyals and a few British officials used to play Polo at this ground, and that is the reason why it is called Polo Ground as well. It was in 1998, when with an objective of making a big stadium, the existing structure was torn down. However, the renovation work only began in April 2001.

After its completion, the newly-built stadium was handed over to the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs. This upgrade saw the stadium get modern amenities, including indoor basketball court, VIP area, hostel accommodation, etc.

On 22 September 2005, the new Palzor Stadium was inaugurated by the then President of India, Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam with the then Chief Minister of Sikkim, Dr. Pawan Chamling and Governor of Sikkim in attendance.

Today, besides sporting events, the stadium has become a venue for Republic Day and Independence Day parades and other social events including the Red-Panda festival of Sikkim.
