The Indian state of Sikkim has always been known for its natural beauty, and one of the main aspects of its beauty is the rich variety of flowering plants it is home to. It is blessed with more than 600 of the 5000 orchid species found in the world, and about 30 species of rhododendron. The state is also popular for other flowering plants including primulas, poppies, cineraria, gladiola, fuchsia, powder puff lily, chrysanthemum, celosia and gentians.

Flower Exhibition Centre, which is located below the famous Ridge Park of Gangtok, Sikkim, is a place where tourists to the city can witness some fantastic flower species all throughout the year. The exhibition center has a medium-sized tropical greenhouse, where several varieties of Orchids and Rhododendrons, among others can be seen.

One of the popular attractions of this exhibition center is the Annual Flower Show it conducts in the month of April-May. During this show, hundreds of flower species, including gentians, celosia, azaleas, hydrangeas, roses, rhododendrons, tulips, liliums, anthuriums, poppies and orchids are put on display, collected from the different parts of Sikkim.

Participants from neighboring states too are invited to take part in this show, which is organized by the Government of Sikkim.

History of Flower Exhibition Centre – Ridge Park Gangtok

The Flower Exhibition Centre is situated across the White Memorial Hall, which was constructed in 1932 in memory of Claude White, the first political officer of Sikkim. This white hall is a two-storey, colonial style structure.

Close to that is located the Ridge Park and below it is the Flower Exhibition Centre. This center is home to several flowering plants, which are grown here every year, with each being neatly labeled with their name.

Visitors to the exhibition center can spend some quality time witnessing the several species of flowering plants. Those interested in nature photography will definitely love taking pictures of the colorful flower plants. Strolling over the small bridge constructed over an artificial pond inside the premises is sure to soothe the senses of the tourists and give them a pleasant feeling.

Besides visiting the exhibition center, tourists can head to the other important attractions of the city of Gangtok and nearby areas including sacred monasteries, Hindu temples, shopping markets, waterfalls, parks and sanctuaries, etc.

The Flower Exhibition Centre is open to the public from 9 am on all days of the week. Visitors need to leave the premises by 5.15 pm. The entry to visit the exhibition center is Rs. 20. Entry into the Ridge Park is free of cost.

How to reach Flower Exhibition Centre – Ridge Park Gangtok

The Flower Exhibition Centre can be reached from any part of the city quite easily by hiring a taxi from top car rental companies in Gangtok or by bus. The place is only about a 10-minute walk from Gangtok’s MG Road. Tourists can reach Gangtok either by air, rail or road.

By Air: The closest airport to the city of Gangtok is the Bagdogra International Airport in West Bengal. It is about 123 km away from here. The airport receives regular flights from the major cities of the country. On reaching the Bagdogra airport, tourists can hire private taxis to travel till Gangtok. It usually takes about 4-5 hours to travel this distance.

There is another way to reach Gangtok by air, and it is the helicopter service available at the Bagdogra airport. The helicopter ride is of about 20-30 minutes; however, due to extreme weather conditions in the area, this service might not be available on all days.

By Rail: The nearest railhead to Gangtok is the New Jalpaiguri Railway Junction, Siliguri in West Bengal. The distance between Gangtok and this station is around 118 km. Tourists can hire private taxis or board private/public buses to travel from the railway station to Gangtok. It takes about two hours by taxi and four hours by bus to cover the distance.

By Road: Buses from Bagdogra, Siliguri, Kolkata, Kalimpong and Darjeeling regularly ply to Gangtok.
