Lal Bazar Road is one of the popular shopping areas of the city of Gangtok. Located close to the ever-famous M G Market, this place is where locals as well as tourists flock to all through the week, especially on Sundays!

It truly depicts the vibrant diversity and ethnicity of the State of Sikkim. A shopper’s paradise, the area is home to the Lal Bazar Market, which today after renovation has been turned into a modern market complex called the Khangchendzonga Shopping Plaza.

In this market, local farmers from different parts of Gangtok gather to sell their produce including butter, cheese, vegetables, dried fish, etc. Besides these food items, electronic gadgets, clothes, local handicrafts items and other local products are on sale in this market.

The ground and 1st floors of the buzzing shopping complex feature only vegetable shops while the 2nd and 3rd floors are where tourists can shop for clothes and other items.

This part of the city should be visited to explore the hustle and bustle and interact with locals and shop for local items.

History of Lal Bazar Road in Gangtok

Lal Bazar was established as an open market in 1956 for the people of Gangtok. Named after J. Lal, a Dewan of Chogyals, this market was demolished to make way for the present-day large shopping complex called the Khangchendzonga Shopping Plaza. This renovation took place in 2005.
