History of Ganesh Tok

It’s believed that Sikkim Ganesh Tok is over 200 years old. Before the temple was built here, the place was inhabited by evil spirits. It was only after a sage started meditating here that the local people could live peacefully. Through his prayers, he was able to drive away the spirits. Then, he constructed a small temple here, dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

It has been renovated and rebuilt several times over the years. The current temple was built in 1952-53 by Shri Appa B Pant, the former Political Officer for India in the Kingdom of Sikkim.

Architecture of Ganesh Tok

Ganesh Tok Temple is small, with a tiny sanctum that houses an idol of Lord Ganesha. In fact, the temple might look no different than the brightly coloured houses in the region.

A flight of stairs leads to the top of the hill where the temple is built. The climb is steep, but the view from the top makes it worth the effort. Colourful flags are tied throughout the path, making the temple stand out.

Only one person is able to enter the temple at a time. And they have to crawl their way to reach the idol of the lord.
