History of the Hanuman Temple, Gangtok
In the 1950s, a political official named Appaji Pant experienced a divine vision in this location. Following this spiritual encounter, the statue of Lord Hanuman was erected at this spot. From that time onwards, the temple has become locally known as Hanuman Tok.
By 1968, the entire area was transferred to the Indian Army's jurisdiction. Presently, it is maintained and protected by the units of the 17th Mountain Division of the Army.
Adjacent to the Lord Hanuman Temple, a temple is also dedicated to Shirdi Saibaba. Just to the right of the entrance to the stairway, you will find the cremation ground of the former Namgyal Royal family of Sikkim. You can observe numerous stupas and chortens in this area.
