Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park, spread across an area of approximately 500 acres, is one of the top nature parks of not only Sikkim but India as well. It was established in the early 1990s to preserve the Himalayan wildlife of the region.

Located at a distance of about 6 km from Gangtok, this nature park lies at an elevation of 1780 m above sea level in an area called Bulbulay. The zoological park is home to a rich variety of faunal species including Himalayan Palm Civet, Snow Leopard Cat, Himalayan Red Panda, Tibetan Wolf, Barking Deer, Clouded Leopard, Large Indian Civet, Himalayan Tahr, Common Leopard, Porcupine, Yaks, Serow, Himalayan Monal Pheasant, Crimson-Horned Pheasant, Goral, Silver Pheasant, Golden Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, Lady Amherst Pheasant and Himalayan Black Bear.

Maintained by the Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department of the Government of Sikkim, this zoological park is home to a large number of wild endangered animals, who have been kept in artificially-replicated natural conditions.

It fulfills all the necessities of a full-fledged zoo but with a difference that the animals live in their natural environment, safe and protected from poachers. Besides this, the objective of the park is to create awareness among people about wildlife and wildlife education, research and eco-tourism.

The ideal time to visit the Himalayan Zoological Park is between February and May and September and December. These are the periods during which the weather in this region remains pleasant and perfect for an enjoyable experience amidst nature.

The Himalayan Zoological Park, one of the first of its kind in the north-eastern part of the country, was established in 1991.

As the Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park is spread over a massive area, all the animals have been kept in open enclosures. To witness them and get a panoramic view of the park, a watchtower has been built inside the premises.

There are plans to introduce a Ropeway in the park to make the experience even more exciting for visitors. Another treat for the visitors to the park is the views of Mount Kanchenjunga from here.

There is a road of 2.5 km length that runs through the park. Tourists can walk on this road and explore the park. Alternatively, they can hire a vehicle for about half a day and reach the different habitats in the park quickly.

In addition to exploring the different habitats, visitors to the park can enjoy beverages and snacks at the café available inside the premises. They can also shop at the souvenir outlet in the park.

The Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park remains open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm on all days of the week, except Thursdays.

The entry fee for Indian nationals is Rs. 25 for adults and Rs. 10 for children. The fee for foreign nationals to visit the park is Rs. 50. Parking fee for small and large vehicles is Rs. 40 and Rs. 100, respectively.

How to reach Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park Gangtok

The zoological park lies at a short distance from the city of Gangtok, on the way to Tashi View Point, located close to Ganesh Tok. Tourists can hire private taxis from top car rental companies in Gangtok to travel till the Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park. They can also contact the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC) to hire vehicles.

Tourists have different options when it comes to traveling to Gangtok as it is well connected to the rest of the country by air, road and rail transportation.

By Air: The Bagdogra International Airport, about 123 km away in West Bengal, is the nearest airport to Gangtok. The airport is well connected to the rest of the country and receives regular flights. Tourists can hire private taxis at the airport to reach Gangtok in 4 to 5 hours.

Alternatively, they can choose to take the daily helicopter service, which is available from the airport till Gangtok. The helicopter ride is about 20-30 minutes. This service might not be available all the time because of the varying weather conditions of the area.

By Rail: The New Jalpaiguri Railway Junction, Siliguri in West Bengal, about 118 km away, is the nearest rail junction to Gangtok. Private taxis as well as public/private transport buses can be availed from the station to travel to Gangtok. It takes approximately 4 hours to travel this distance by bus and about 2 hours by taxi.

By Road: Regular bus service to Gangtok is available from cities of Kolkata, Kalimpong, Siliguri, Darjeeling and Bagdogra. All the buses from these cities ply till the Gangtok SNT Bus Station.

Things to keep in mind while visiting Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park Gangtok

  • Respecting the privacy of the animals should be kept in mind.
  • Feeding or trying to feed the animals is prohibited.
  • Laughing or talking loudly that may disturb the animals is not allowed.
  • Littering inside the park should be avoided and keeping it clean is expected from all visitors.
  • Visitors need to follow the designated trails meant for them and follow the guidelines of the park.
  • Carrying plastic bottles or polythene bags inside the premises is prohibited.
  • Visitors are expected to not throw food wrappers or packages inside the zoo; disposing them off is their responsibility.
  • Photography and videography is allowed inside the park.
  • Visitors are advised to wear proper gear, especially earthy-colored clothes to easily blend with the environment.
  • Wearing a comfortable pair of shoes is suggested.
  • Visitors need to hire the services of a guide for a better experience.
  • There are washrooms and drinking water points inside the premises.
