Buddha Park, also known as Tathagata Tsal, is located in the charming town of Ravangla, which is perched at an altitude of 7000 feet in South Sikkim. This park is a famous Buddhist attraction and a major landmark for the Buddhist community.

This captivating park is an ideal place for locals and tourists to relax and soak in the beauty of the majestic Himalayan mountain peaks. Built between 2006 and 2013, this park has a notable centerpiece - a 130 ft high statue of Lord Buddha. The park is situated inside the religious complex of the Rabong Monastery, which itself is a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site.

History of Buddha Park in Gangtok

The credit of constructing the Buddha Park goes to the joint efforts of the people of Ravangla and the Sikkim Government, with their aim being to boost the religious tourism of the region. The main attraction of the park – the Sakyamuni Buddha statue was consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama on 25th March 2013.

Today, the statue has become an important site of the Himalayan Buddhist Circuit. The statue was built and installed in the park to mark the auspicious occasion of the 2550th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.

One of the interesting aspects of the Buddha statue inside the park is that it is visible from all directions in Southwest Sikkim and many parts of West Sikkim. Located inside the Rabong Monastery complex, the Buddha Park also features a Buddhist conclave, meditation center and a museum.

The meditation center is open to both monks and tourists. Inside the museum, the life of Lord Buddha has been beautifully depicted. There is also a lake inside the complex called the Cho Djo Lake, which is surrounded by a forest.

The Buddha Park is a charming little place, which boasts of peaceful surroundings and lush gardens. The uninterrupted views of the Cho Djo Lake and the scenic Himalayan peaks in the background make it a perfect place to sit, unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Being a Buddhist site, it offers a spiritual experience to the visitors. Besides relaxing at the park, tourists can also visit the museum, meditation center and the Buddhist conclave inside the complex.

The best time to visit the park is from April to June, but coming here between September and November is more fruitful because this is the time when tourists can enjoy the vistas of the snow-capped Himalayan Mountain peaks as well as witness colorful flowers blooming in the park.

Besides the park, another important attraction to visit in this region is the Ralang Monastery, which is a sacred Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Another experience tourists will definitely love being part of is the five day Ravangla festival called ‘Rabong Discovered’.

This spring-time festival comprises a dance and traditional music competition, flower show as well local food and handicraft stalls. During the festival, adventure enthusiasts also get an opportunity to indulge in activities including camping, boating and mountain biking in the area.

How to reach Buddha Park Gangtok

Ravangla, where the Buddha Park is located, lies at a distance of about 67 km from the city of Gangtok. Tourists can either hire a taxi from top car rental companies in Gangtok or board a local bus to travel from Gangtok to Ravangla. The travel time in a taxi is around 2 hours 30 minutes while the travel time by bus is approximately about 4 hours.

By Air: The nearest airport to Gangtok is the Bagdogra International Airport in West Bengal, about 123 km away. This airport receives flights on a regular basis from major cities of India. Tourists can choose to travel to Gangtok from the airport by hiring a private taxi.

A daily helicopter service is available from the airport till Gangtok. It takes about 20-30 minutes to reach Gangtok. However, this service might not be available on all days due to bad weather conditions.

By Rail: The closest railhead to Gangtok is the New Jalpaiguri Railway Junction, Siliguri in West Bengal, about 118 km away. Tourists can hire private taxis or board public/private transport buses to travel to Gangtok. It takes about 4 hours by bus and around 2 hours by taxi to travel this distance.

By Road: Regular bus service is available from Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Kolkata, Bagdogra and Siliguri to Gangtok.
